Reduce Your Clutter to Move Forward With Your Life
Do you feel that your clutter and junk is pulling you down in life? If yes, take note from this excerpt from the book, "LIGHTEN UP. Free Yourself From Clutter" by Michelle Passoff.
One of my clients was in the midst of separating from her husband, and the emotional turmoil seeped into her business affairs, throwing her papers, as well as her life, into a state of chaos. Her unwillingness to settle divorce papers, pay taxes, and submit insurance claims all reflected her inability to confront her loss and her life ahead. Unsigned wills and reminders to reserve cemetery plots oftentimes can keep moving from pile to pile. Clutter increases in direct proportion to the amount of time you ignore a problem. Take action and watch your dread dwindle as your clutter is reduced. Hanging onto or dishonoring the past is clutter. Photographs and memorabilia are the most common variety of this type of clutter. If photographs are bunched in bags or tossed in with today’s mail, they constitute a mess, not a fond memory that can be fully shared or appreciated. The most striking example that I have seen of this sort of clutter was a man whose home was more of a monument to his past than a breeding ground for the future. His apartment was crammed with everything, from university diplomas to mementos from his fortieth and fiftieth birthday parties, to advertisements from his father’s long-defunct business, and to sports trophies and memorabilia dating back to a time when the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn. His whole life was on display, making his apartment a museum of the past, rather than a showcase of his future.
Indecision turns into clutter. “I’m not sure if I will ever wear that again,” “ I can’t decide if I’ll attend that event,” “It’s possible I may start knitting again,” “I’m not sure whether to donate to my college or an AIDS charity.” Sound familiar? When you catch yourself being indecisive, it is a warning sign that you are headed down the tunnel toward clutter. When enough unworn clothes collect, invitations amass unanswered, or a long-abandoned knitting project takes up space, you’ve got clutter. Clutter is all the things you push aside and think you will decide on later. Usually, before that day comes, moths have eaten the clothes, parties have come and gone, other hobbies dominate your time, and a deluge of other requests for donations complicate the decision of where to contribute. By not making choices, you have chosen to compound clutter. The fear of regret or of making mistakes often keeps people from tossing out objects or making simple decisions. I once spotted an inspirational saying on the white board hanging at the back of a subway token booth. These words of wisdom broke the agony of one rush hour: “Fear is that little darkroom where negatives are developed.” Take a more positive approach to making choices before you push things aside, and watch your confidence grow instead of your clutter.
